Health and Safety

We maintain a personalised 14-page risk assessment and associated training package to help keep us all safe. Below I’ve summarised some of the key steps we implemented, also covering additional measures introduced throughout the course of the COVID pandemic.

We continue to work hard to keep abreast of the latest government and medical advice and will proactively review all measures if required. If there is anything you are curious about, or think we should be doing differently, I’d welcome your feedback via email at thesheldanpub@gmail.com.

I have been delighted at the willing cooperation of all our patrons and because of this, hope we can continue to provide an atmospheric, enjoyable and safe environment, whether in person on the premises, when we’re delivering food to you, or for anyone that comes to The Sheldan Inn for a collection.

Do you offer contactless delivery?

All of our delivery staff are Sheldan employees who wear face masks and gloves when delivering, with plentiful supplies - including 70% anti-bacterial wipes and hand gel - within their vehicles.

On delivery, they will notify their arrival and step a minimum 1 metre away from the door to await opening.

Have staff received relevant training?

All our staff have received training on our Risk Assessment and processes.

All staff have achieved ‘Coronavirus: Taking Proactive Action’ and ‘The Cask Marque Trust: Bar Excellence’ certification.

What about staff safety?

Staff wear masks and/or visors and wash their hands frequently throughout their on-site shifts for a minimum 20 seconds. They wear gloves to load and unload dish and glass washers. They have further access to gloves, plastic aprons and additional masks if they wish them, plus we have deployed clear screens at the only two potential points of customer interaction in front of our tills.

How do you support customer safety?

There are automatic hand sanitisers at entrances and throughout the property for staff and customer access; we have wipes dispensers and adjacent bins for our customers to access for cleaning down public screens, pool cues etc., before or after use.

How do you keep things clean while you’re open?

We have a regular cleaning discipline in place for all areas, with particular focus on thorough cleaning and disinfection of tables at changeover.

What about access to the ‘facilities’?

We have toilets at both the front and rear of the premises, accessed via wide corridors that facilitate socially-distanced queuing if required. Access to toilets is limited to a maximum 2 persons and we have a regular cleaning programme in place to maintain cleanliness and disinfection.

We’re worried about sharing condiments

For the well-being of diners, wrapped cutlery is provided with one-use-only sachets of seasoning and sauces as required.

How do you manage the numbers
of people in the pub?

All customers are requested to book tables in advance via OpenTable, where we have capped the maximum numbers and party sizes that can be accommodated. Where necessary, guest names and contact details are also recorded manually by staff. What about social distancing?

Furniture inside the pub has been thinned out and reorganised to provide a minimum 1 metre distance between chairs when located side by side, or back to back, with a minimum 2 metres between chairs that face each other across different tables.

What if someone ignores having symptoms?

An infrared thermometer is used to measure staff and patron temperatures on arrival; anyone with an elevated temperature is requested to return home and adhere to COVID-19 guidelines as appropriate.

Other precautions

Background music throughout the pub is volume controlled; any elevated voices are actively discouraged to minimise risk.
